There are universities that offer a year’s time to complete your master’s degree. But, you might find it quite difficult to do along with your duty hours of either teaching or research assistantship. Generally it would take 18 months to complete the thesis for the master’s degree. Again, some courses have prescribed curriculum and that does not allow you to finish off your course within one year. But, if you are for pursuing a MBA degree, there are many business schools that might allow you to finish the course off in one year.

Is it possible to take up any field that is not relevant with my undergraduate degree for earning a graduate degree?

It is a general phenomenon to do a graduation study on the field that is relevant with your undergraduate subjects. However, in case you have studied on allied subjects in your undergraduate classes and wish to enrol for graduating on a particular subject, then it becomes mandatory for you to complete the designated undergraduate courses on that subject in the same institution where you wish to enrol for your graduation degree. Again, in case of admission to professional degree courses such as hotel management or business education, the mentioned rule do not apply. For a business education program, one might require some relevant work experience.

A research degree is typically a 3-4 year commitment and need only be used by international students with an excellent work ethic and smarts. Not all international students are ideal for a research degree, it takes a lot of time to get a research degree and a ton of work. Having a research degree can open up your future and offer a lot more job opportunities to you.

You need time, money, and the work ethic in order to complete a research degree, but once it’s complete your life will be a lot better as you’re guaranteed steady jobs throughout your career with a research degree in your back pocket. Like I mentioned earlier a research degree isn’t for the weak at heart and you need to be hungry for education to succeed.

Here are just a few things you should consider before thinking about joining a research degree program while studying abroad.

1.    You must have a huge amount of interest in the research degree you’re taking.
2.    Do you have ample amounts of time to complete a research degree abroad?
3.    Can you speed through huge amounts of information while analyzing it for knowledge needed?
4.    Research degrees cost a lot and you also need money for rent and food, can you afford it?
5.    You need to possess the skills to work on your own a lot.

All five of these things need to be considered before applying for an international research degree. You should make sure that you can place a checkmark beside each one of the numbers on the list, and if you can’t then maybe a research degree isn’t designed for you.

You’ll also need to research the institutions that are offering the research degrees and you need to make sure they have room for international student’s, confirm they work with international students, find out which institutions offer the degrees you’re interested in and a lot more. Applying and joining a research degree is one of the biggest steps you’ll make in your entire life so make sure you’re prepared for what’s down the road and also come ready to learn.

International students make wonderful students but without a great work ethic you won’t make it. If you think you have what it takes to come to the United States and complete a research degree then you should start by finding the institutions you’re interested in and send out applications. International students who leave American with a research degree often go back to their home countries with a high paying job already waiting for them. Businesses like employees with global experience, especially when the experience is work related in the USA.

There are both pros and cons of research degrees but after weighing out the options make an educated decision and decide whether or not a research degree abroad is designed for you. Also take into consideration that you’re own your own while in the States and you’ll be away from your family for a considerable amount of time and if you get home sick then don’t even think about studying abroad as your away from your home for a year at a time.
