International students are always quite familiar with traditional universities, these are universities where you go to classes daily, eat in cafeterias and sleep in dorms. This is the average university life for international students and students in the USA. With the change in technology and the workforce needing more business and computer minded individuals, there are now many non-traditional universities you can attend to achieve your degree. These universities don’t operate in anyway close to how traditional universities are handled and the whole idea is completely different.

Students who usually attend non-traditional universities are students who are usually adults with full-time jobs during the days. All of the classes are taught at night and the teachers are adult faculty whose day job is teaching. The idea behind these universities is that students both American and international can attend these universities to achieve there degree faster. The universities are designed to offer the knowledge that the student needs in order to gain the practical knowledge to work in the given industry.

International students who are looking to achieve there bachelors degree or master degree in a quicker timeframe then a traditional university would be suitable for the non-traditional university. The universities run year long and you can attend classes throughout the entire year including the summer. Compressing your degree isn’t recommended unless you are very smart on the subject and can provide adequate practical knowledge when tested. Usually when an international student leaves for a non-traditional university the student will be matched with a host house, which is the house which is responsible for you while in the country. You can learn the American culture, foods, people, education and job experience all simply by attending a non-traditional university in the USA.

The non-traditional universities allow cater to specific needs of their international students and they understand that the international students will require more attention and help at first in order to adapt to the new country. They provide services to help fitting in around the university and many clubs are available so that students can become social. Join some groups and clubs when first starting out as an international student, this is not only a great way to meet Americans attending the campus but also international students from other countries who are attending the campus.

It’s important for both American to understand international culture and for internationals to understand the American culture. By offering international students the chance to attend a non-traditional university it opens the doors up completely for that international student when they arrive home as they’ll have the experience they need to land a big job in their home country. Most big companies operating in international countries like hiring employees with international experience working in the USA and with your international university degree you’ll be guaranteeing yourself one of the best jobs available in your home country as most residents of your country won’t have the knowledge or experience it takes to complete the tasks.

How to Find International Internships

For international students looking for an internship in America in can be very difficult to find and the easiest method by far is to be enrolled in an academic program that offers international internships. Without being enrolled in such a program you run the risk of not being able to be apart of the international business market. If you’re not enrolled in an academic program that offers international internships then your only other options would be to try contacting businesses yourself, check websites and of course utilize your contacts to the best of your ability. Even then you’ll run into Student Visa issues and this can cancel the entire internship completely. You need to have full student status in the States or a student visa but without either you won’t be aloud to come and get hands on international work experience in the USA.

International Students Need To Do the Following to Guarantee an International Internship

Typically internships are part of the international program which the student signed up for and if it’s not part of the curriculum then there isn’t much you can do. Interns coming into different countries to work must retain there F-1 student status, which gives international interns a full time student status in the country while studying. Also interns cannot legally be paid for any of the work they complete. Securing a job is simple after finishing an international intern, but it’s not easy to retain employment in the US and usually you’ll need to go back to your home country to secure a job. Your home country would love to hire a student coming back from an international internship where they just received hands on training from US staff.
